A little story about the Negroni cocktail

It is not absolutely clear where the origin of the Negroni is …. The most popular story is the one that this cocktail was mixed the first time in 1919 at the Caffè Casoni in Florence. Count Camillo Negroni told the bartender Fosco Scarselli to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by adding gin instead of soda water. This was the birth hour of the Negroni. The bartender then added an orange garnish instead of the typical lemon garnish of the Americano to signify that it was a different drink.

The Negroni cocktail was very successful and the Negroni family founded Negroni Distillerie in Treviso where they produced a ready-made version of the Negroni and sold it under the name „Antico Negroni 1919“. One of the earliest reports of the drink came from Orson Welles while working in Rome on a film in 1947, where he described a new drink called the Negroni, „The bitters are excellent for your liver, the gin is bad for you. They balance each other.“

Due to other sources descendants of General Pascal Olivier de Negroni , Count de Negroni, say he was the Count Negroni who invented the drink in 1857 already in Senegal.
